Windows 7 running on an old HP notebook
I wanted to test Windows 7 on an old HP Pavilion DV4305US that I own. It is not the original configuration as the hard drive and RAM have been upgraded. The machine’s specs are:
Intel Celeron 1.40GHz CPU 1GB RAM 250GB hard drive GPU – Mobile Intel 915GM/GMS, 910GML Express Chipset [...]
Microsoft needs to fix their installer application
Updating to Windows Live Movie Maker (version 14.0.8091.0730) from a beta on my Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit machine was typical of many Microsoft software installs, fail upon fail upon fail. This should have been a simple process. It wasn’t.
I saw the dialog window pictured to the left [...]
Windows 7 RTM – My first install
I just posted the following on my FriendFeed feed:
#Windows7RTM 64-bit box final – 75+ apps 36 good Windows updates 5 failed 17 hrs tot. Whew! glad it’s over. Process stinks. Macs are easier.
I am my own guinea pig. I never recommend products that I haven’t tried myself. My [...]

Migrating to Windows 7, two questions
An email I received yesterday asked,
I can’t find a QuickLaunch toolbar. XP had one that detached from the taskbar and could be located anywhere. Vista’s QuickLaunch was always attached to the taskbar. I used both to keep my desktop clear of icons. Is it somewhere or does Win7 abandoned it? They [...]

Below is the abbreviated Microsoft upgrade table, which is useful in evaluating whether or not you can upgrade your Windows OS and if so to what.
And here is the Apple upgrade table for Snow Leopard, excluding server upgrades.
Do you notice a difference?
This post does not address [...]
This free program solves a problem I never knew needed solving—accessing Windows desktop icons without minimizing everything else. It works with Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7.
You launch and it runs in the background, waiting for you to type Ctrl+Alt+D to access the desktop icons.
The desktop icons are moved to the front visual [...]
A client asked me, “Why her WordPerfect shortcut icon on her desktop had a small Windows security shield emblazoned on it and the other program shortcuts did not?” I did not know the answer.
The image to the right has four icons. The “Restore Computer” icon shows the Windows security shield. The [...]
