Thunderbird 3.0 Attachments Reminder
Thunderbird is the Rodney Dangerfield of email clients. It shouldn’t be.
I use it as my main business email application for many reasons, not the least of which is that it handles HTML code much better than any of the major alternatives, such as Microsoft Outlook [...]
Microsoft needs to fix their installer application
Updating to Windows Live Movie Maker (version 14.0.8091.0730) from a beta on my Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit machine was typical of many Microsoft software installs, fail upon fail upon fail. This should have been a simple process. It wasn’t.
I saw the dialog window pictured to the left [...]
SmarterFox 2.1.2 screws up Google Reader
SmarterFox is a Firefox add-on that has some remarkable features. It adds useful functionality to Firefox. I liked SmarterFox until today. The current version has changed the way that Google Reader displays, adding its “endless page” feature to the Reader and in so doing, obscures [...]
Windows 7 RTM – My first install
I just posted the following on my FriendFeed feed:
#Windows7RTM 64-bit box final – 75+ apps 36 good Windows updates 5 failed 17 hrs tot. Whew! glad it’s over. Process stinks. Macs are easier.
I am my own guinea pig. I never recommend products that I haven’t tried myself. My [...]
Why is Hewlett Packard installation software so awful?
I frequently install HP printer and all-in-one software for myself and clients. It never works the way the instructions indicate. NEVER!!!!!!!!! And it takes forever to install.
Have the software engineers at HP ever tried to use this stuff? My experiences suggest the answer is no.
Setting up these devices on networks [...]
RealPlayer much maligned, very useful
RealPlayer has a reputation for selling itself too hard and for making changes to a computer system without informed user consent. Real has reformed but the reputation continues. Apple’s iTunes, which installs QuickTime, Apple Updater, Bonjour and lots of other crapware without explicit user consent, seems immune to [...]
RealWorld Paint.COM is a free image editor for Windows
Okay, the application’s name could be better, but the application is a neat drawing and image editing tool.
It works with all modern versions of Windows (2000 to 7). RealWorld Paint.COM can use most Adobe Photoshop plug-ins. And its free.

I’m a PC. I’m a Mac and I cost a lot more.
Microsoft is running new video ads, Lauren is one, that highlight the affordability of Windows computers compared to Macs. The ad is quite good, the best that Microsoft has done in recent memory.
Mac enthusiasts are likely to counter that they get value for the extra expense—simplicity of use, [...]
Hiding navigation elements – is this a good idea?
I was recently surprised by inadvertlently pressing the Alt key when viewing Vista’s Windows Explorer window (the file manager). The menu toolbar appeared as if by magic.
Is Microsoft’s business model done? Yes, almost.
ohn Dvorak’s MarketWatch article Microsoft’s business model is done suggests that Microsoft is increasingly pricing itself out of the end-user computer market. The article has ignited passions amongst the technorati. Paul Thurrrott responded at his SuperSite for Windows with “John C. Dvorak shoots for controversial but pulls a Michael Moore and gets his facts wrong…”. Woody Leonhard at AskWoody.com responded with Windows vs Linux, take 346,782, wherein he disagrees with Thurrott and agrees with Dvorak. Herein I respond to all three.
