What’s a certificate authority? Should you care?
We depend upon certificate authorities (CAs) every time we go to an https website, like those of our bank, our email website or when we buy something online.
Secure websites use a cryptographic system that employs both a public and a private key. The private key is usually generated from your username [...]
Turn on Do Not Track in your browser
Lately, a movement to add some privacy to our browsing has taken hold. Microsoft’s Internet Explorer 9 (Windows 7 only), Mozilla Firefox 4 (all operating systems), and Apple’s Safari for the Mac OS X 10.7.x, codenamed “Lion”, all add a Do Not Track [...]
Speed up your browser, turn off proxies
The following applies to Windows and OS X in slightly different ways.
We all want our computers to run faster. Starting up your browser can be slowed down if it is searching for proxies. Most likely you don’t know what a proxy server is. You probably aren’t running a proxy server or [...]
Open letter to Congressman Jim Himes
Dear Congressman Himes:
I was unable to stay and talk to you at today’s Weston, CT brown bag lunch meeting. I am writing this letter instead.
It is my opinion that national technology policy, law and regulation are headed in the wrong direction. The US is fast becoming a nation where a few, [...]

The right set top box for you
What’s the best set top box (STB) for you? It’s one that meets your needs and wants. It’s one you can afford, figure out how to install, how to use and provides you the content you want.
Selecting the right one(s) for you is best done by first deciding what services you want [...]
Use It or Lose It? Greedy cellphone companies
Yesterday I was struck by the thought,
Why don’t cell carriers provide roll-over megabytes/gigabytes for bandwidth paid for but not used each month? Why is it "use it or lose it?"
I immediately tweeted that.
I had just read Sascha Segan’s PCMag.com article,
From the annals of computer history
I recently came across a reference to a 1963 memo from J.C.R. Licklider about networking computers. At the time, he was working for ARPA, the predecessor to DARPA. The memo was titled, Memorandum For Members and Affiliates of the Intergalactic Computer Network, really! It may be [...]
Cablevision/Optimum Online outdoes itself
I just ran a speed test on my Internet connection and was astounded by the results. I pay for Optimum Boost which is supposed to give me about 30 Mb/s downstream and 5 Mb/s upstream. The test showed over 55 Mb/s down. WOW!
RHFtech Help Desk (and more) upgraded to WordPress 3.0
This site uses WordPress. It is a great content management system. WordPress.org recently announced a new version. I decided to bet the store and upgraded to WordPress 3.0 from 2.9.2. I backed up everything first and then clicked the “upgrade automatically” link on the notice at the top of the administration [...]
