This is my first impression of the Zune software.

Zune is Microsoft’s name for its media player, an iPod competitor, and the related services and software. The Zune HD was officially launched yesterday.

I do not own a Zune player. I do not expect to buy one.

The free Zune software is available as a download for Windows computers. It comes in both 32-bit (XP, Vista and Windows 7) and  64-bit versions (Vista and Windows 7).

The installation and setup were easy. The interface is attractive and modern. It is more attractive to my eye than any version of Apple’s iTunes player, including the recently released version 9. I was pleasantly surprised at how quickly it cataloged my collection of over 50,000 audio tracks, something that every other media player program chokes on.

I was playing the Beach Boys and the Beatles in short order. Kudos to Microsoft for designing an attractive, usable, easy-to-use and useful application.

below are some screenshots of the Zune player

Installation is straight forward.  image

I was surprised that right after I installed it an update was needed. These days, I shouldn’t be surprised by this, it seems that every program needs to be updated every time I launch it. image

Once the update was complete I was presented with the Welcome screen.

Unlike iTunes you can personalize the player.
