A client purchased an LG BD370 Blu-ray player to connect to the bedroom HDTV. The player features both BD Live and LG’s NetCast Entertainment Access (NBE). NBE allows the viewer to connect to the Internet and watch streaming video from Netflix, CinemaNow, YouTube and others. It can also access websites such as Yahoo’s Flickr to view photos.

The installation was normal until it came to connecting to the Internet. The house’s network is typical. We employ a D-Link router, with wireless 802.11n and wired Gigabit Ethernet and a couple of D-Link wired 24 port, Gigabit switches. The BD370 is connected to the LAN via a CAT6 cable.

Getting the unit to talk to the Internet proved to be a difficult time-consuming task. The network setup screen is limited. One can choose DHCP IP (dynamic IP addressing) or Static IP addresses. If you choose the latter you must supply an IP address, a subnet mask and a DNS (Domain Name Server) address. The first of many attempts was made using DHCP where the router supplies the address. The machine’s icon reported that it connected to the Internet but whenever we tried to access the web we would get a message about network congestion.

The unit does NOT show its IP address, subnet mask and DNS address, so it is hard to see what is wrong.

We then tried a static address and subnet mask using the network’s gateway address as the DNS address. This is a typical setup for devices connected to a LAN. We got the same message about network congestion. Next we tried connecting directly to the cable modem to make certain that the device could talk to the web. This worked.

Now it became an issue of solving what was blocking the device when attached to the router. The router did not report the device as one of its attached items. But we could ping it from a computer so it was definitely on the network. After many pings, other tests and reboots of routers, cable modems and the Blu-ray player the device showed up on the router’s device list. But we still could not communicate with the web.

imageI then changed two things. I set up port forwarding for the device for port 32768 and set the static DNS address to 208.67.222.222 an OpenDNS DNS server. Problem solved!

This only took two days to solve, about 10 man hours in total. In the final analysis, it would have been cheaper to hook up a media center computer rather than the LG BD370.

  1. Brian Krebs says:

THANK YOU! I had my network on the player setup as static based on other devices I use on my network with the DNS set to my router’s IP. The very first night it was hooked up, was able to run a firmware update without any problem. The second night, it checked for updates upon powering on, told me that a driver update was available and kept getting a download failure. Tried Netflix and YouTube and got the network congestion or generic network errors. I then found your blog. I first set up the port forwarding for my router and that didn’t fix the issue, but once I changed my DNS setting to the OpenDNS setting above, everything worked. Not sure what the problem is since everything else I have set up as static(desktop, laptop, Xbox 360, DirecTV boxes) with the DNS set to the router IP works, but since things stopped working after I did the first firmware update, leads me to believe that there is a bug in that update.
Once again, thanks for having already figured this out so I didn’t have to continue banging my head against the wall.

    @Brian Krebs
How do you set up the port fowarding for D-link router

  4. Richard says:

    @Dan

On a D-Link DIR-655 (this may be common to other D-Link routers):

    1. Sign in to the management console.

    2. Navigate to the “Advanced Tab” on the menu across the
    top part of the console.

    3. Select “Port Forwarding” from the vertical menu on the left.

    4. Set up a new Rule for the LG BD370.
4a. Type “LG BD370″ for the application name field.
4b. Type the player’s IP address in the IP Address field.
You need to know its IP address. If you set it up with
a static IP address this is easy.
4c. Type the port number in both the UDP and TCP fields.
(May only need the UDP but I don’t know what LG is
actually doing for its communication protocol.)

    5. Click the “Save Settings” button near the top of the screen.

any clue how to do this on a sky router as i get the same will not connect i see on my router that in the Firewall Rules all incomming is blocked ..not a good set up would have been better just to ask for network password

I am not familiar with Sky Router(s). My investigation suggests that there are several different models/manufacturers – Netgear, Sagem and Sky.

Perhaps you can identify the make and model of your router and we can work forward from there.

    Please let me know.

Your router’s admin console should have a place where it lists all the devices in your local area network (LAN).

I reiterate my lack of familiarity with Sky but…

I wonder if you successfully set up the OpenDNS settings. This may be trickier on the Sky router than elsewhere.

I found a link for doing this at http://technicianspot.blogspot.com/2008/03/use-open-dns-with-sky-router.html. I have reproduced that post below:

Use Open DNS with Sky Router

I have been playing around with the sky router and I have found a way in which you can use OpenDNS with V1 of the Sky router without re flashing it. The V1 of the router is the Netgear DG834GT. Its quite Simple and take on a few mins to do. There is a not a lot that can go wrong but make a backup of your settings just in case something does go wrong.

    1. Login to your router setup, buy default type 192.168.0.1, and the username and password are admin & sky respectively.
    2. Click on backup settings on the left hand menu
    3. Click on backup and save the file
    4. Locate where you saved the file and open it in your favourite text editor
    5. Then locate the following lines
    “#
    # 0:off 1:on
    [20601]“Use These DNS Servers”=0
    [20602]“Primary DNS”=
    [20603]“Secondary DNS”=”
    6. This is what we need to change. It should be enough to simply replace it with the following lines:
    #
    # 0:off 1:on
    [20601]“Use These DNS Servers”=1
    [20602]“Primary DNS”=208.67.222.222
    [20603]“Secondary DNS”=208.67.220.220
    7. Then save the file changes.
    8. We now reupload this file to the router. Go into your router and click on Backup settings. Find the ‘Restore Saved Settings from a File’ and browse for the settings files we just modified.
    9. Click on restore and wait for it to complete. Once it has you should see the DNS settings changed in the router status page, to OpenDNS’s. Where the IP address’s were in the text in step 6, you can replace that with any DNS server IP you wish to.

Hope this little guide helps you to get a more responsive internet experience.

  14. paul sheriff says:

hi thanks again for trying but sorry i have v2 and this is what i have
I have a new type Netgear DG934G (black) from Sky. The config file is different in the DNS area, like this -
    #
    # 0:off 1:on
    [130001]“Use a Dynamic DNS Service”=0
    [130002]“Host Name”=
    [130003]“User Name”=
    [130004]“Password”=
    # 0:off 1:on
    [130005]“Use Wildcards”=0
i tryed changing it to 1 rather than 0 but nothing ..and i tryed changing the dns to yours the only 1 that says im online is my router ip

  15. paul sheriff says:

    I have a Dlink DIR-655 Router.
When you look at the router status (use the web based router set up software) it will show you the IP adress od all the devices connected. (The blu-ray player must be tuned on and cnnection set up set to Dynamic. The IP address of mine showed 192.168.0.199. Also the router status will show your primary DNS server and your IP address of the router which will be 192.168.0.1.

Then go to the Blue-Ray Player and set it to Static enter the following:

IP – This is the blue-ray address selected by the router 192.168.0.199

Gateway – IP address of the router 192.168.0.1

    Subnet – 255.255.255.0

DNS – shown on the router as “primary DNS server” comcast is 68.87.71.230

    works like a charm!!

  19. Colin T says:

    Hi,
I’ve just bought this blu-ray player and am having Network Congestion issues for accessing YouTube.

I am on BT Broadband using BT HomeHub v1.5 (white one), and have powerline network adapters for the BT Vision box.

On setting up the player I just unplugged the Vision box and plugged in the player to the powerline adapter and left at Dynamic IP. Connection appeared OK and a successful software and driver update followed. But no YouTube.

Tried Static IP using the DNS given by BT (192.168.1.254) still no joy. Port forwarding to 32768 didnt help (if i did it correctly). Set up OpenDNS account and used the DNS 208.67.222.222 still Congestion.

Unfortunately with the HomeHub it is not possible to set the DNS in the router, so with OpenDNS I can only configure the PC/player and not the network as a whole.

    Anyone any ideas? Please…..

    Many thanks

  20. peter e says:

    Colin,

I use Tisacli but got the same thing. All I did was to configure the static IP settings on the player but use the open DNS server address (the other static settings – default gateway etc can be gotten easily by typing in ipstat in the command prompt on any attached PC, obviously selecting a unique ip address.) Didn’t need to mess with ports. Hope that helps

  21. Jack says:

    Hey Richard,

I just got a sweet deal on the LG 42LH40 and got the BD370 for free. Can you point out a reputable wireless adapter for it that will work with the router supplied by my ISP? I have an Actiontec MI424WR. I think I should be able to supply ample bandwidth, as FIOS gives me 25 Mb/s down.

Thanks for the help, and I appreciate your response.

  22. Colin T says:

    Thx for the reply Pete.
I removed the port forwarding setting from the hub, and then this morning I plugged in the BD370 to the powerline adapter. Initially I got the same Congestion message but after about 10mins it worked.
Maybe I was being too impatient before! Now to buy some more powerline adapters.
    Thx again

  23. Richard says:

    @Colin T
I do not believe you can use a WiFI (AKA wireless) adaptor with the BD370. According to this CNET review you need the BD390 model for that.

  24. Colin T says:

    @Richard

Not meaning WiFi adapters. Am already using Comtrend Powerline network adapters for the BT Vision box, need another to plug the BD370 into so it’s permanently connected to the network.

  25. Richard says:

    @Colin T
Why not buy another Comtrend Powerline network adapter?

  26. Shaun says:

    Hey All,

I have no idea how to do port forwarding or most of the stuff yuo guys are talking about. NOOB! I just bought this Blu-Ray player and I get the same network congestion prompt. I have a Belkin wireless modem/router on iinet. I live in Autsralia if that matters. How do I watch Youtube videos on my BD370?!

Thanks in advance for any help

  27. Richard says:

    @Shaun
There is a YouTube tutorial on port forwarding a Belkin router at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BgSVzp3c6ZM.

Another site with lots of router specific information is http://www.portforward.com/

    Hi..
Have the same problem as Colin T described with his BD370 at first:
    - no YouTube connection but only ‘There may be networks congestion’
    - The ‘Network status indicator’ shows everything is okay
    - I can download firmware updates
    - I can ping the BD370 IP-no.
    - BD370 is setup with static IP adress
    - I tryed severel DNS (192.168.1.254) my own DNS without any luck
    - Port forwarding to 32768 didnt help

Still no access to YouTube.Hope to get some help with this problem, because i’m total lost for the moment.
    Thanks in advance.

  29. Chris says:

    Hi all,

Recently purchased the LG BD370 and am looking for a way to bridge a connection from the router to another computer, and then in-turn send an ethernet line from the 2nd computer to the Blue Ray. This is due to the fact that I have an ethernet line running from my basement (Blue Ray location) to my living room (main level of house), however my main household computer is on the upstairs level of my home. Is it possible to run the wireless connection to the main level computer and then bridge a ethernet line from that computer to the basement resulting in obtaining internet access to the Blue Ray

Any help or suggestions would be helpful
    Thanks

Forgive me if I am asking the wrong question, on the wrong forum, etc. I have an LG BD390 and love it. I have the Blu Ray Player (LG BD390) connected directly to the internet and now have my PC running wirelessly through a Belkin N+ Router. I have a Nero HomeMedia Server program running (this information might be extraneous and unrelated to my question.) Here is the question: Can I access the Internet (www) through the BluRay player? I’m not talking about Netflix and You Tube–I already get those. Can I access any internet address via this BluRay player? How?

Thanks for your patience and any advice or information.

  33. Chris Olson says:

BD370: Working properly, connecting to internet, downloading updates, streaming Netflix.

All you need to do to make this work is to set the BD370′s DNS settings to:

    Primary Server: 208.67.222.222
    Secondary Server: 208.67.220.220

These are the IPs of the OpenDNS DNS servers (www.opendns.com).

Once you set these properly, you should be able to download the latest firmware update and stream everything perfectly.

I, too, was unable to connect to the net, download update, stream Netflix, or anything – UNTIL I manually set the DNS servers as above.

You do not need to forward ports. You do not need to set a static IP address.

Set the DNS, and you’re set.

  34. Kari R says:

    @ Chris Olson

I tried leaving the setting as Dynamic IP, and setting the OpenDNS servers manually. I get an error on my BD370 that “Wired Dynamic IP is not set”.

I checked my router and it’s enabled for DHCP…. any ideas why my BD370 can’t get an IP address?

I really wanted to get this set up for my husband before he got home tonight, it’s his birthday gift. :)

I am having the same problem with my BD370. I had followed these steps before when I first purchased the player (OpenDNS server, port forwarding, etc), and it all worked fine for a few months.

A couple weeks ago, it simply stopped working (no changes made to the router or any other network device).

I’ve tried all the various DNS settings above and I cannot get it working…any advise?

  40. Michael J says:

I did what Joe Cocco listed and it worked fine for me. The only problem was after I did the update. I had to set all the setting again, because the update put all my settings back to the factory defaults. From problems that I have had with computers, the problem seems like it is a DNS problem. So it makes since that setting the gateway and which DNS server to use would save the problems that the player is having using the internet.

  41. Vic Morley says:

I have just bought a LG BD370 and although I think I have tried every thing I still cant get the router a netgear DG834PN to even know its there any ideas welcome

  42. Umbrae says:

Thank you so much. All I have to do was open port 32768 for this device and it worked good. Not sure if I have a more recent unit, but it worked fine after opening the port.

I think the static IP and DNS setting might be a red herring. A static IP may be required if you cannot setup port forwarding on a DynIP, but for my router I can. I also had no issue with DNS, but I have a business class connection and don’t have any filtering. I am willing to bet people are having filtering problems on the ISP side. As an example, if you ISP highjacks DNS, you might need to use OpenDNS. If they block or interfere with port 32768, you might get congestion issues. Honestly, the unit should just have used port 80 or something that would be universally allowed.

However, I just have to unblock the port and it worked fine. Since this is the ONLY place I found that referenced the port, it was a life saver!

    Thanks again.

  43. Conny says:

I sent an email to LG Support yesterday about the congestion-problem, and recieved a reply today. They answered that the problem is that YouTube portal is overloaded, and that i should try again later…

    I think they are lying…

  44. Richard says:

    @ Conny
As the character Special Agent Gibbs on NCIS might say, “Ya think?”

I think they are misinformed, at best.

  45. David says:

I too called LG, and they told me thet the problem was with ISP’s and they are blocking the Youtube service and to contact them (Sky). I called Sky and they said they knew nothing about this and need to get further details from LG to specify what the exact problem is. I don’t think anybody at LG or Sky know what’s going on

I was told that the engineers are working on a firmware update to correct this annoying problem with the ‘There may be Network Congestion’ banner. It could be as early as next week, but I was told to keep on trying to see when it will be updated by visiting the LG website, as they have no timescale for the update.

Computer problems now fixed but after Blu-ray network setup test, it appears to be connected to the internet but Netflix, or anything else, isn’t connecting. Unit is hard-wired to router and we still can’t connect. Any suggestions?

Tonight we’ll try to see if setting up a static IP will work but I don’t think we should have to do that. If no success we’ll return Mr. BD390 despite all the glowing reviews. I wonder if those reviewers have ever tried to contact LG support????

  50. Rebecca says:

Two Days latter and much research on the internet, I have finally successfully wired my LG BD 390 to the internet via a Dlink DIR 655 router without upgrading to the new firmware. I am excited to be able to view netflix movies in HD.
