Readability, a better way to read web pages
Sometimes all we want to do is read the content on a web page. This can be frustrating when the page is cluttered with images, text, navigation tools and flash objects.
The Readability bookmarklet is a way to deal with this clutter. …
Tweaking Twitter
The basic Twitter home page is spartan. I added two Firefox Greasemonkey userscripts to improve the page. I like the “improved” page much better. What do you think?
Amazon asserts its "rights" on the Kindle
A significant concern I have about the Kindle 2 is that Amazon can do whatever it wants with regard to the owners’ use of the device. They can willynilly change the terms of service and harm owners’ interests without any recourse. I wrote about this in my March 3, 2009 post Amazon’s Kindle 2 Reconsidered.
Amazon Kindle 2 battery life
The Kindle 2 battery life is poor when the wireless is left turned on. There is no quick way I know of to turn on/off the wireless.
Here is the process:
Hiding navigation elements – is this a good idea?
I was recently surprised by inadvertlently pressing the Alt key when viewing Vista’s Windows Explorer window (the file manager). The menu toolbar appeared as if by magic.
Synchronicity, technology's holy grail
There are many ways to sync pieces of our data stores. Yet there is no simple, universal way to sync all of it. Data stores include files, calendar, email, contacts, photos, music, video, etc. You might expect a solution from Microsoft, Google or Apple. None exists.
Is Microsoft’s business model done? Yes, almost.
ohn Dvorak’s MarketWatch article Microsoft’s business model is done suggests that Microsoft is increasingly pricing itself out of the end-user computer market. The article has ignited passions amongst the technorati. Paul Thurrrott responded at his SuperSite for Windows with “John C. Dvorak shoots for controversial but pulls a Michael Moore and gets his facts wrong…”. Woody Leonhard at AskWoody.com responded with Windows vs Linux, take 346,782, wherein he disagrees with Thurrott and agrees with Dvorak. Herein I respond to all three.
Is this the bottom for hardware prices?
Is it the beginning of the next depression or only a severe recession? [Update: A friend suggested we call it the Great Recession.] No matter what we call it there are implications for us in this current economic climate. One of the unexpected consequences may be increasing hardware prices rather than a continuing decline, which we have become accustomed to over the past several decades.
The facts:
Yahoo! hosts the RHFtech web site.
I needed to change a link on over 200 pages from my old blog to the URL http://blog.rhftech.com.
The standard way to make a global change is to add a redirect command in the .htaccess file on the root directory of the web site. This is commonly known as a 301 redirect.
Yahoo! does not allow access to this file.
Amazon’s Kindle 2 Reconsidered
The Kindle 2 has the potential to permanently alter and destroy consumer rights with regard to written material.
My initial reaction to the Kindle 2 was overly positive. …
